Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine which involves the use of thin needles that are gently inserted into your body. The needles help to release the tension within your muscles to loosen your body and allow you to relax!

At our Gold Coast Holistic practice, Dr Adriana Cayuela and Dr Amy Serone offer acupuncture services that are tailored to your specific treatment and health needs, delivered with a compassionate and gentle approach.

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture is a form of treatment that is a part of traditional Chinese medicine. It involves the insertion of fine needles into the skin at specific points. The ultimate goal of acupuncture, according to Chinese medicine, is to restore balance and promote the body's natural healing process.

The needles are left in your body for around 20 – 30 minutes to provide adequate time to get the most out of your treatment.

By stimulating these areas, acupuncture may help to enhance:

  • Blood circulation
  • Wound healing
  • Immune system
  • Digestion system

Treatment process

Initial consultation

During your first visit, you and your therapist will discuss your needs and area of focus for your treatment. This way, you can be provided with a customized plan to treat your condition.

If you have any concerns or questions, feel free to use this time to get a better understanding of our service.

Clothing

You may be required to remove some clothing such as your shirt, however you will be provided with a gown or towel to cover your body. To do this, your therapist will leave the room and wait until you are changed. Once you are ready, you will be asked to lay on our padded massage table so that you can relax and begin your treatment.

Inserting needles

Once you are comfortable, our therapist will insert our very thin acupuncture needles which may cause little to no discomfort. These needles are strategically inserted around your body or the area of concern. Some patients do not even notice them go in; however, you may experience a slight discomfort when a needle reaches the correct depth required to release tension in your muscles.

The needles may be left in your body for around 10 to 30 minutes.

Needle manipulation

From time to time, you may feel your therapist gently move or twirl some of the needles around certain tension points. This is a technique to enhance your treatment and further loosen up tight, stubborn muscles.

Electro stimulation

Some conditions may benefit from electro acupuncture. Your therapist will insert needles at the area to be treated and will attach electrodes to the needles stimulating with an electric current.

Removing the needles

Finally, the needles will be gently removed from your body. Usually, you may not even notice they are being removed.

If you feel any pain or discomfort during this stage, please let your therapist know immediately.

Auxiliary treatment

Your therapist might use cups, guasha, massage, and Chinese herbs depending on your needs, providing a holistic and complete treatment.

Why do people use acupuncture?

People use acupuncture for a variety of reasons which depend on their personal preferences.

A systematic review carried out by The British National Health Service and published in the article “Mapping the evidence base and use of acupuncture within the NHS” investigated the evidence for acupuncture use to treat or manage a range of disorders.

They found that evidence existed that acupuncture is effective to treat jaw pain, dental pain, and to control nausea after chemotherapy treatment and operations.

For many other conditions people may use acupuncture for, the evidence has not been systematically reviewed or current scientific evidence to prove the effectiveness of acupuncture for these conditions is not yet established (1).

If you are not certain that you are a suitable candidate for acupuncture, you should consult with a medical professional to see if this would benefit you. Furthermore, you can also take this opportunity to discuss any risks which may impact you or an underlying health condition.
