Why Choose Same-Day Porcelain Crowns

Same-day porcelain crowns are a common restorative dental treatment. Dental crowns are versatile and can be used for repairing your chipped or cracked teeth.

Unlike a traditional crown, same-day crowns only require a single dental visit. By manufacturing the crowns on-site at our practice, the patient can leave with the final restoration on the same day.

So why choose same-day crowns?

Our team has provided you with everything you need to know about same-day crowns.

What are traditional crowns?

Dental crowns are tooth-shaped caps which can restore a damaged tooth. Your dentist will reduce the damage tooth at the front, back and sides to make space for your new restoration. The crown will then be bonded in place. As a result, a dental crown will restore your natural tooth in size, strength and appearance.

Generally, a traditional crown procedure requires you to attend multiple dental appointments to ascertain the correct shape and size of your surrounding teeth.

Your dentist will recommend a dental crown treatment if you have:

  • Heavily decayed, worn or broken teeth
  • Cracked or chipped teeth
  • Recently undergone a root canal therapy

Same-day crowns vs traditional crowns

Same-day porcelain crowns are similar to traditional dental crowns, with the key difference being that the treatment is completed within a day. The procedure only requires you to attend a single appointment to enable us to create your dental crown.

In comparison, a tradition crown treatment usually takes two weeks between first appointment and the insert of the final restoration. You will have to attend multiple visits to your dentist to mould, fit and manufacture your crown. For patients, this can be time-consuming. Same-day crown treatment, however, takes only a day.

Digital impression

Firstly, your dentist will take a digital impression of your teeth with a 3D scanner. Using the 3D image, your dentist will design your crown on a computer screen. The design will be transferred to a CEREC machine that will mill your custom-made porcelain crown.

A CEREC machine is formally known as a Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics (CEREC). The machine can create an accurate representation of your teeth, matching its size and shape.

CEREC machines are also used to create ceramic inlays and onlays.

Glazing

Once manufactured, your dentist will glaze your customised crown to suit the colour of your surrounding teeth.

Inserting your crown

Lastly, your dentist will insert your new crown onto your damaged tooth, completing the same-day crown procedure.

Why choose same-day crowns?

Completed in a single visit

Unlike a traditional crown, same-day porcelain crown treatments are completed in one appointment rather than two. As a result, this process saves you time and money.

Avoid the use of temporary crowns

Same-day crowns eliminate the need for temporary crowns. During a tradition crown procedure, temporary crowns are used on your teeth until your permanent crown has been made. They require more care and restrict what foods you can eat.

Reduces waste

3D imaging involves the use of CAD software. As a result, all images are retrieved or displayed digitally. Furthermore, the CREREC machine used to create your crown is extremely accurate so there is no wastage of dental materials.

Is the procedure painful?

If you undergo a same-day crown procedure, it is usually pain-free. Your dentist will inject a local anaesthetic into your gum to ensure you are comfortable during the process. If you have any pain during or post treatment, make sure you seek additional advice from your dentist.

How long do same-day crowns last?

If you do not regularly maintain good hygiene habits, this can affect the longevity of the crown.

However, if you do maintain good dental hygiene, your same-day porcelain crown can last for up to 10 years or more. Visiting your dentist regularly for a check-up will enable you to keep on top of any issues that may present itself. Ultimately, this will improve the lifespan of your crown.

To further improve the longevity of your crown at home, we recommend you incorporate healthy habits such as:

  • Eating a healthy and balanced diet
  • Brush and floss daily (at least twice for a minimum of 2 minutes)
  • Limit sugary food and drinks
